By Atención staff La Biblioteca sponsors more than a dozen art, music and educational weekly classes for children. These classes are provided free of charge to the children. Approximately 9,600 children attend these classes annually. Lack of funds, however, mean that the music classes for piano and guitar may be cancelled. As La Biblioteca faces financial difficulties, not having governmental funding, it has implemented internal cost-cutting measures and proposed amendments to its bylaws to accommodate current economic conditions. Although members voted on July 12 in favor of the amendments, a quorum was not reached and the changes were not legally approved. If the cultural and educational programs do not receive sponsorship or funding La Biblioteca will have to reduce wage expenses to teachers and hence cancel classes. Such is the case with a guitar class on Fridays 6-7pm, and a piano class on Saturdays, 10am-noon. To avoid the cancellation of these classes, La Biblioteca seeks the collaboration of two volunteer teachers to continue the classes or sponsorship to cover teacher’s wages.
