The Biblioteca set a new record for books received in a 3 month period thanks to the generosity of several donors. During July to September 2009 received as donations approximately 3310 books, of which 960 are in Spanish and 2350 are in English. What happens with donated books?
Books received at the Biblioteca
The donated books are sorted to Spanish and English titles and the librarians and volunteers undertake a review of all of titles. First the physical condition of the books is checked and then the book database is checked to see if the title already exists in the database. If the title does not exist the book is entered into the database, labeled and put on the shelves for public reading. Should a the title already exist, a volunteer, with the book in hand, will visit the repeated titles location in the library and determine if the donated copy is in better physical condition than the library’s existing copy. If the recently donated copy is in better condition, it will be used to replace the existing volume. Occasionally an older and/or rare book or signed first edition will be found in the donations. These books are set aside and sold in our annual rare book sales. Repeated titles in good condition are designated for donation to the libraries in rural communities. If the books are not part of the rural library’s collection they are cataloged and added to it with the help of people from the community and from the schools.
How many books were added to the Biblioteca collection? From the recent donations during the last 3 months 118 titles in Spanish and over 200 titles in English have been added to the library’s database. The Biblioteca has also donated recently approximately 500 titles to the rural library programs in communities such as; Cruz del Palmar, San Antonio de la Joya and Los Rodríguez. The surplus English and Spanish books are sold at the Biblioteca’s book sale which is held every Thursday in the library court yard. All proceeds from the book sale go to support the library’s children’s programs.
