La Biblioteca de San Miguel de Allende
Hope For Their Future PDF Print E-mail

In the countryside around San Miguel, during the long stretch between planting and harvesting, a 12-year-old girl attends school by day, does homework for several hours each evening and sometimes accompanies her family to town at night to scavenge garbage cans for scraps of food.

Her thin, young face is tense as she joins the long line of hopefuls awaiting an interview at the Biblioteca. If she is granted a 500-peso (US$36) per semester stipend, she can continue in school and fulfill her dream of achieving a better life for her family.

Students line up for Becas Students line up outside the Biblitoeca for Beca interviews The worry lines crinkling her young brow relax after being told she meets the Biblioteca’s rigorous financial and scholastic requirements. But according to Kelvia Ford, co-director of the scholarship program, “Donations are down dramatically. Unless a miracle happens, we must either deny some very deserving students, or lower the amount of each scholarship. That would be a shame.”

A reduction would be a literal disaster for Valentín Banca Ramirez, a law student who depends on the Biblioteca’s 3000-peso (US$226) per semester university stipend. Valentín attends classes on Saturdays. During the week, he studies three hours after working up to 13 hours per day doing odd jobs to support his family. Because work is hard to come by, his income varies between 700 and 1200 pesos (US$52 and $90) per week. Exhaustion is imprinted on his prematurely wrinkled face, but Valentín’s parents never went to school and he is determined to lift his loved ones from poverty via a career teaching in university. Like Laura Salgado, a single mom who owes her accounting degree to the Biblioteca’s scholarship program, Valentín will be the first in his family to graduate.

Year after year, the program, “My vacations in the Biblioteca,” represents a great opportunity for children in the community of San Miguel de Allende to come to this institution for several weeks and discover the option of recreational reading, as well as numerous activities. What’s more, these young children, teenagers and adults enjoy well-deserved scholastic vacations in the library.
